The purpose of SERV is threefold.
1. Networking and Support
2. Legal Advocacy and Representation
3. Educational Initiatives
First, we provide a natural point of contact for veteran students. We help new students with veteran-specific administrative issues (such as the GI Bill) and arrange networking events with other law schools and veteran lawyers and at firms and government offices throughout the City.
Second, through our partnership with the Urban Justice Center, we conduct pro bono work on behalf of New York veterans largely left behind after exiting military service. We provide the Urban Justice Center with NYU Law students, who in the course of doing their work meet the university’s pro bono requirement.
Finally, we engage in educational advocacy. We serve as a hub for all of the university’s veterans groups, connecting interests across disciplines. We also address issues of concern with the university administration.
